The A-10 Thunderbolt II is the only aircraft in the Air Force inventory specifically designed for the purpose of ground support. It is a highly maneuverable twin-engine aircraft that packs a lethal punch with its combination of 30MM Gun System and large weapons payload, which includes AGM-65 Maverick Missiles, AIM-9 Sidewinders, and a variety of smart and dumb bombs.

Some additional nicknames for the A-10 are Warthog, Hog, Hawg, Tank Killer, Silent Thunder and according to one report, the Iraqis reportedly referred to it as the Iron Cross during the first Gulf War.
