The A-37 Dragonfly began its service as a modified version of the T-37 "Tweet" training aircraft. Those modifications included installing a more powerful engine (J85-GE-17A) borrowed from the F-5 Freedom Fighter, a stress resistant airframe, increased fuel load and air refueling capability to allow it to perform close air support, local engagement and reconnaissance missions. Additionally the aircraft was fitted with a 7.62mm Gatling minigun in the nose, as well as gun cameras and armor protection for the pilots. It features self-sealing fuel tanks, a tracking beacon system, and the ability for directional tracking of VHF and UHF signals. The A-37 has the unique distinction of being the only aircraft to have undergone operational testing during actual combat.
